Not having correct angle, not being close enough, if you are using shield, you can't be holding your shield up while you are trying to backstab, that will give you just basic r1. I'm not sure if I"m misunderstanding the "critical" stat on weapons, but it seems that the Estoc (I don't have one yet to test) has only 100 critical, and should therefore do less damage than the Uchigatana which also has 100 critical, but even higher base damage YoukaiSlayer 7 years ago #6. Parrying does more damage. In addition some weapons have hidden bonuses to riposte damage such as all thrusting swords. Doesn't make the game unplayable, but still mind boggling. the reason you still got backstabbed is not lag or latency, and to avoid it in the future you just need to understand the mechanics of how backstabs work in ds3. someone comes up to your back and presses r1, this initiates the backstab grab animation. if you get out of the initial grab Dark Souls III will once again allow you to backstab your enemies for some pretty high damage.
